Leeds United all but secured their top-flight status and gifted Manchester United their eighth Premier League title in 11 seasons with a shock 3-2 victory at Arsenal, in this classic Highbury encounter of May 2003.

Arsenal had twice managed to drag themselves back into the match, with Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp cancelling out Harry Kewell and Ian Harte strikes.

Yet in a match Arsenal needed to win, United's Australian striker Mark Viduka produced a moment of magic in the 88th minute, to finally end Arsenal's title challenge and shrug off the threat of relegation for Leeds.

The visitors took the lead as early as the fifth minute when Harry Kewell controlled a Jason Wilcox's long ball before unleashing a ferocious volley into the back of the net.

With 14 minutes left until the break, however, Henry had hauled Arsenal back level, heading home from close range after Ray Parlour's strike had been saved by Leeds keeper Paul Robinson.

THUNDEROUS DRIVE

Nevertheless, just after the re-start Arsenal were once again behind.

Ashley Cole gave away a foul on the edge of his own box, and the set-piece expert Ian Harte made no mistake for the away side from the resulting free-kick, beating Arsenal goalie David Seaman at the far post.

This Arsenal side, however, were not prepared to go down without a fight and showed the stuff of champions just over 10 minutes later when again they equalised.

Robert Pires, ever the architecht, charged into the penalty area before laying the ball back for the legendary Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp whose thunderous drive gave Robinson no chance.

At 2-2 the Gunners desperately went in search of a crucial winner, throwing men forward at every opportunity.

And they very nearly found it when Henry's superb strike smacked against the woodwork.

PACKED HIGHBURY

But with two minutes left on the clock, Viduka stormed through the Arsenal defence, and having engineered some room for himself with his strength and poise, he curled a shot past Seaman, breaking Gunners hearts in a packed Highbury.

After the match Leeds caretaker manager Peter Reid expressed his relief at having all but secured their top-flight survival with the victory.

Reid said: "When Alan Wiley blew the final whistle, there was a lot of relief. This was a crucial result, for me personally and the football club. It was a great team performance.

"Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell caused Arsenal problems all game, even though we had to defend really well and desperately at times in what was a cracking game."

"I hope Alex Ferguson will send me a crate of red wine, although, knowing him, it'll be a bottle!"
