A review of Saturday's pre-season friendly action involving Barclays Premier League sides.
Brett Emerton and Morten Gamst Pedersen got the goals as Blackburn Rovers finished their Australia tour with a 2-1 win over Sydney FC.
With 37 minutes gone Gael Givet hit a long ball which Steven N'Zonzi flicked on and Emerton controlled before firing in the opener.
Half an hour later Rovers extended their lead when Junior Hoilett set up Keith Andrews whose effort was spilled by Sydney keeper Liam Reddy and Pedersen netted the loose ball. Alex Brosque pulled a goal back when he was given too much time in the area with nine minutes remaining.
Mark Bunn kept his side's lead intact three minutes later with a save from Shannon Cole.
thumping header
Tim Cahill netted a hat-trick as Everton registered a 4-2 victory over Norwich City in a pre-season friendly at Carrow Road.
Cahill put Everton ahead in the sixth minute, the Australian turning just inside the box and seeing his shot slip through the grasp of goalkeeper John Ruddy, playing against his former team-mates following his summer switch from Goodison Park.
Cahill doubled his side's advantage seven minutes before the break, capitalising on some slack defending to head home at the second attempt. Norwich pulled a goal back a minute into the second half, Adam Drury's cross being met with a thumping header by Andrew Crofts, who claimed his first goal for the club.
City then levelled in the 59th minute with Drury again involved. His quick throw found Andrew Surman and he cut inside the box to curl the ball past Tim Howard, also his first for the club.
But Everton regained the lead within seconds, half-time substitute Diniyar Bilyaletdinov curling the ball into the top corner from Steven Pienaar's clever backheel.
Cahill completed his hat-trick with 19 minutes left, eventually finding the net after Phil Neville crossed.
curling home
Newcastle United came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven at St James' Park.
The Dutch side took the lead in the 10th minute. Ola Toivanen was fouled by James Perch just outside the box and he made the Magpies pay by curling home the resulting free-kick.
PSV increased their lead five minutes before the break when Balazs Dzsudzsak was allowed time and space to unleash a shot from 25 yards which flew past goalkeeper Steve Harper.
The Magpies pulled a goal back in the 51st minute when goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson could only parry Perch's cross into the path of Ryan Taylor, who made no mistake from close range.
Taylor was then the architect as Newcastle levelled with 17 minutes left, his free-kick being met with a glancing header from Leon Best.
There was a minute's applause before the match to mark the first anniversary since the death of Sir Bobby Robson, who managed both clubs.
only goal
Carlton Cole scored the only goal as West Ham United claimed victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The winner arrived in the 30th minute. Julien Faubert's cross was met by Luis Boa Morte, whose header was parried by Town goalkeeper Brian Murphy and Cole nodded home the rebound.
Tamas Priskin twice went close for the home side but Hammers goalkeeper Rob Green - once at local rivals Norwich City - was equal to the task.
New manager Mark Hughes watched from the stands as a strong Fulham side lost 1-0 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park in Linvoy Primus' testimonial.
Pompey captain Marc Wilson headed home Matt Ritchi's corner in the 31st minute - his second goal in three days - while long-serving defender Primus played the first 12 minutes.
For Fulham, Damien Duff fired over the crossbar, Hayden Mullins cleared Bobby Zamora's header off the line and the striker also had a header well saved by Pompey stopper Jamie Ashdown.
opening match
Bolton Wanderers were held to a goalless draw by Scottish Premier League side Falkirk in the opening match of their mini tour of Scotland.
Striker Johan Elmander came closest to opening the scoring when he saw his shot hit the outside of the post shortly before half-time and only an excellent performance by goalkeeper Robert Olejnik kept the Bairns in the match.
For Bolton, Adam Bogdan posted his third clean sheet of pre-season while Chung-Yong Lee got through 60 minutes in his first start since reporting back from World Cup duty.
caused confusion
Steve Coppell's first home match in charge of Bristol City ended in a 2-0 win over Barclays Premier League newcomers Blackpool.
The day started on a high with the unveiling of new signing David James and he was paraded before the City supporters on the pitch prior to kick-off.
And it got better for the vast majority of those inside Ashton Gate as Coppell's side netted twice in three minutes midway through the first half.
Ivan Sproule latched on to a throughball from David Clarkson before neatly sliding his shot underneath the advancing Paul Rachubka after 21 minutes.
Sproule's long ball over the top then caused confusion in the Blackpool defence and Clarkson capitalised on the hesitation between Rachubka and Ian Evatt to roll the ball into the net from 12 yards out.
Blackpool were disappointing and did not even register a shot on target.
attempted clearance
Derby County slipped to their first defeat of pre-season as Birmingham City won 2-1 at Pride Park.
The Barclays Premier League side took the lead after 31 minutes. Sebastian Larsson whipped in a corner and David Murphy escaped his marker to score with a header.
The visitors extended their advantage in the opening minute of the second half following an poor error by Stephen Bywater.
There appeared to be no danger when Gareth Roberts passed the ball back to Bywater but the big goalkeeper dallied and allowed Larsson to block his eventual attempted clearance and the ball rebounded into the empty net.
Derby reduced the deficit after 58 minutes. Robbie Savage's free-kick was cleared to the edge of the area and Roberts drove an unstoppable shot high beyond Ben Foster's dive and into the top corner.
smashed home
Michael Tonge hit the winner as Stoke City secured a 2-1 friendly win over Burnley.
Stoke midfielders Glenn Whelan and Rory Delap were both replaced before the half-hour mark to give Tony Pulis some selection concerns in a drab first half.
New Clarets goalkeeper Lee Grant came on at half time but was soon picking the ball out of the net as Stoke took a 52nd-minute lead.
Liam Lawrence cut in from the right to cross for Tuncay to head into the net.
Burnley levelled through a Graham Alexander penalty after Robert Huth had fouled Chris Iwelumo but Tonge had the final word when he smashed home from 18 yards.
Midlands neighbours Coventry City and West Bromwich Albion battled out a 1-1 pre-season draw at the Ricoh Arena.
Gary McSheffrey after 14 minutes, converting Freddy Eastwood's flick on.
But a strong Albion side equalised in the 73rd minute courtesy of substitute Ishmael Miller, who headed home Gianni Zuiverloon's cross.
strike partner
Fraizer Campbell continued his pre-season goalscoring spree to help Sunderland secure a narrow 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the Walkers Stadium.
Campbell presented another convincing case for his inclusion as a strike partner for Darren Bent this season when his close-range finish from Jordan Henderson's throughball gave the Black Cats the lead after only six minutes.
But the Championship club were level 10 minutes later when Matty Fryatt slid a well-weighted pass behind the Sunderland defence and Andy King lifted his shot over the advancing goalkeeper.
In the second half Henderson's low strike was fumbled horribly into his own net by home keeper Chris Weale to give Steve Bruce's side victory.
Marouane Chamakh scored on his home debut but Arsenal had to settle for a 1-1 draw against AC Milan in the Emirates Cup.
The Morocco striker - a free transfer from Bordeaux - produced a neat finish to put the Barclays Premier League side ahead just before the break.
However, Arsene Wenger's young Gunners were eventually pegged back when Pato nodded in a free-kick with 14 minutes left and on Sunday face the challenge of Celtic, who drew 2-2 against Lyon earlier.
eluded everyone
Leeds United produced a spiriting display to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in their final home friendly.
The hosts took the lead in the first half when Max Gradel smashed home from 25 yards to cap an impressive opening from the winger.
But they were pegged back on the stroke of half-time when Matt Jarvis' free-kick eluded everyone and ended up in the back of the net.
Leeds soon restored their lead, though, when Lloyd Sam netted with just three minutes of the second half gone and made sure of the match when Bradley Johnson struck late on.
Patrick Vieira was sent off as Manchester City lost 3-0 to Inter Milan in Baltimore.
In City's final match of their USA tour, the veteran midfielder saw red after just 21 minutes after he was alleged to have elbowed Marco Materazzi.
Inter took control after Vieira's dismissal and took the lead in the 39th minute when Esteban Cambiasso fed Victor Obinna whose shot from wide on the left found the net via substitute Micah Richards.
City fell further behind in the 54th minute when Inter added a second when Obinna's cross was deflected into his own net by the unwitting Joleon Lescott.
And the impressive Italians added some gloss in the 74th minute through a wonderful long range strike from Cristiano Biraghi.
Emile Heskey found his scoring touch as Aston Villa beat Feyenoord 3-1 in the Guadiana Cup in Portugal on Saturday evening.
Heskey and fellow substitute Steve Sidwell both netted in the final 20 minutes after Marc Albrighton's opener inside five minutes was cancelled out by Luc Castaignos.
Sidwell's strike was the pick of the evening's goals, the midfielder firing a 25-yard rocket into the top corner.
