The Tigers' scheme, through a combination of theory and practical activities, hopes to raise awareness of key health issues in men between the ages of 18 and 40.

The event, co-ordinated in conjunction with the Premier Leagues' Places for Players scheme, took place at the recently opened NHS Health Central in St Stephens Shopping Centre.

The centre is the first of its kind in the UK, offering free drop-ins to members of the public, who can gain advice on leading a healthy lifestyle from local Health Trainers.

Although the City stars arrived straight from training, they were still put through a rigorous health check, including having their blood pressure taken, weight noted, and body mass index measured.

Both Boateng and Cooper were relieved to pass their check-ups with flying colours. Following their appointments, the Tigers' players ventured outside to take part in football drills, as well as making their very own smoothies.

Dutch midfielder Boateng enjoyed the experience, and saw the club's new health scheme as a positive opportunity for those in the local community to change their lifestyles for the better.

"Regular health checks are important, they are the basis of what we as footballers do every day, we have to make sure that our heart is healthy, that our blood pressure is right, and that our body fat is at an acceptable level," he said.

"As a professional athlete your health is always a priority, it's important that you live life in the right way, and the same should apply to everyone else.

"I'm delighted to support this scheme as it's great for members of the public to have the opportunity to drop in and have their health checked. They can make sure that they are in good shape and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

"The good thing is that it's free of charge, as sometimes people want to have an assessment but they can't as it will cost money. The Health Central, though, is here now to help the local people, so you can drop by any time to get checked.

"I've been put through my paces and there were no surprises which I'm pleased with. I had my heart rate, fat and weight checked. The weight was good even though I kept my clothes on!"
