The former England international played for both clubs - and, along with David Johnson, is one of only two players to have scored for both teams in a Merseyside derby.

Now Under 18's coach at Newcastle United, Beardsley still has a lot of affection for the city rivals and is perfectly placed to assess a match which is vital to both.

exciting match

He said: "It will be hard for me in many ways because I want both to do well. But whatever happens, I can't lose.

"Both teams have been struggling recently and that might make it an open game. Both need the win and it will be interesting if they both go for it from the start.

"As the home team, the onus will be on Everton to attack and that might suit Liverpool because Rafael Benitez likes to counter-attack.

"But it should be an exciting match and it is one I am really looking forward to.

"It is a tough one to call but if pressed I would take Liverpool to win it by the odd goal."

Everton have won just one of their last 10 in all competitions to drop to within four points of the relegation zone.

Liverpool have already lost five Barclays Premier League fixtures including three of their last six to drop off the pace in the title race.

However Beardsley has no doubt that both will come good under the guidance of two hugely respected managers.

brilliant job

He added: "I honestly think Liverpool will get into the top four again this season. They have been the distance and know what it is all about.

"And I think Everton will finish in the top seven. They have been unlucky with injuries and once they get a few of their big-hitters back then they will be fine.

"Phil Jagielka has been a big miss and so has Phil Neville who is such a good organiser. Both teams have had a few injury problems but will be OK when they get key players back.

"Both clubs have terrific managers so they will come through this. Rafael Benitez has done brilliant things at Liverpool.

"The fans love him. You look at the banners around Anfield which have his face on along with those of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley - that's how highly they think of him.

"Unfortunately he was not able to get an instant replacement for Xabi Alonso because Alberto Aquilani was injured when he signed.

"I watched him at the Emirates recently and he was outstanding and when he is up to speed he will be a top player.

"And David Moyes has done a brilliant job at Everton. He has a great chairman and they have a really good relationship. They had a lot of fun going to Wembley for the FA Cup final last season.

"So, both will be OK once they get through this difficult spell. But it does add an extra edge to Sunday's match which will be fascinating to watch."
