The Latics were hammered at White Hart Lane by a rampant Tottenham Hotspur side who chalked up the second biggest victory in Premier League history.

Jermain Defoe netted five times as Spurs registered their biggest win for 32 years, since they defeated Bristol Rovers, and their record score in the Premier League.

However the Wigan manager is determined to ensure his side bounce back strongly, arguing it is not the set-backs in life which matter but how you react to them.

He said: "The damage of this won't be carried into the next game. We have enough characters in the dressing room and we need to react in the right way. I've never been involved in a game like this.

"From the mental point of view, we'll get stronger from this. This is a very unique situation but we can use it in a positive way in terms of learning from these situations. We've never experienced this before.

"The biggest disappointment was how we started the first half, then the naivety that saw them scoring in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

"It's about damage limitation after that in terms of going into next week, avoiding yellow cards that will be carried into next week."

serious defeat

Despite the manner of the defeat, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says he still has complete faith in Martinez and is confident the Spaniard can turn things around.

He said: "You have to say Tottenham played superbly well, I mean they were just lightning and Defoe was absolutely amazing and I look forward to seeing him playing like that for England.

"9-1 is a serious, serious defeat and we have got to get our heads up and I am sure Roberto will be working on the lads now to get them going again and get their heads back in the air and get some pride back in Wigan Athletic.

"He is Wigan's manager and I have complete faith in him and I know the supporters have.

"I am absolutely 100 per cent behind Roberto, he's a great manager and he will pull this team around."
