The Cameroon defender limped off in the final seconds of the 3-0 defeat to rivals Arsenal on Saturday with a hamstring injury.

Bassong was attempting to chase down Aaron Ramsey as the Welshman closed in on goal but suddenly pulled up and had to leave the pitch.

worst day

"It's not good news. It's a hamstring. I'll be out maybe four or five weeks. It just feels like my muscle is gone," he said.

"It was really not a good day for me or the club or the fans. It was the worst day of the season."

Bassong, who joined Spurs for £8m from Newcastle United in the summer, has established a strong defensive partnership with Ledley King.

The good news for Spurs is that central defenders Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson, who have missed most of the season through injury, are returning to fitness and both made the bench for Saturday's derby.
