Marco Andreolli struck a 94th-minute equaliser to earn Roma a 1-1 draw from their Europa League match with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Mark Schwarzer had saved a late penalty from Jeremy Menez after Stephen Kelly had been sent off for a foul on John Arne Riise.

Fulham took a first-half lead through Brede Hangeland, who was initially red-carded for Kelly's offence in an identity mix-up.

The Norwegian defender powered in a towering header from a corner to give the Cottagers the lead after 24 minutes of an entertaining tie.

Hangeland was then shown a red card following Kelly's foul on John Arne Riise 13 minutes from time.

After heated protests the referee change his mind and dismissed Kelly before Schwarzer dived to his right to make a fine save from the spot-kick.

Fulham's 10 men clung on bravely and looked to have secured a famous victory over the illustrious Italians until Andreolli's thumping eight-yard volley hit John Pantsil to fly past Schwarzer at his near post. There was barely time to kick off.

Everton thumped

An under-strength Everton side were soundly beaten as they went down 5-0 at Portuguese side Benfica.

Leighton Baines joined the list of absentees before the match. It meant 11 players had withdrawn leaving manager David Moyes with a threadbare squad for this tough tie.

He handed a debut to Donegal-born Seamus Coleman as the Merseysiders looked to chalk up their third successive win in Group I.

With Dan Gosling at right-back, Everton fielded an inexperienced defence against free-scoring Benfica while Tim Cahill, who scored the winner against Bate Borisov in the previous qualifier, was named captain.

The home side took the lead after just 13 minutes with a right-foot volley from Javier Saviola into the left corner from the right of the area.

The Toffees held it at 1-0 until the break but the hosts netted twice in as many minutes at the start of the second half.

Oscar Cardozo fired into the top right corner from six yards out barely a minute after the re-start and 90 seconds later he headed home from similar range to effectively seal the points.

Any lingering doubt about the outcome was removed on 52 minutes when Anderson Luisao nodded the fourth from a corner and Saviola wrapped it up with a six-yard right-foot shot eight minutes from time.
