Speaking at his first press conference, the Italian said: "Zhirkov, (Daniel) Sturridge - these are Chelsea players."

The winger, whose fee has not been disclosed, will follow striker Sturridge into Stamford Bridge as the Blues build for next season's campaign.

As for Zhirkov's role, Ancelotti added: "Zhirkov is naturally on the left. I think he can do all the work and can play in defence and in between."

The 25-year-old, who can play at left-back, wing-back or as an out-and-out winger, caught the eye during Russia's run to the semi-finals of Euro 2008.

Zhirkov, who will join subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed, helped CSKA Moscow win the UEFA Cup in 2005.

The player is Chelsea's third signing of the summer after Sturridge and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.
