News of the 34-year-old left-back's decision to stay on the south coast will end speculation linking the Iceland international with a move to Middlesbrough.

The new deal also includes the option of a further year should Hreidarsson play a certain number of matches next season.

Executive chairman Peter Storrie told the club's official website: "Hermann's been looking at his options and he's decided he wants to stay.

"He's very strong and fit and had a great second half of last season. Hermann's a real character and a great influence in the dressing room, so we're pleased to have him back."

The former Crystal Palace, Brentford, Wimbledon and Ipswich Town defender joined Pompey two years ago after a spell with Charlton Athletic.

He featured in the side that won the FA Cup last year and played an influential role as the club pulled clear of relegation in the latter half of the season just ended.
