Roberto Martinez has made Jordi Gomez his first signing as Wigan Athletic manager.
The Spanish midfielder has been snapped up from Espanyol to link up once more with Martinez who brought him on loan to Swansea City last season.
The highly coveted 24-year-old was a major success at the Liberty Stadium and was voted by his fellow professionals into the Championship PFA team of the year after scoring 12 goals in 41 league appearances for the Swans.
After passing a medical at the DW Stadium, he put pen to paper on a three-year deal.
Martinez revealed that several Barclays Premier League clubs, as well as clubs on the Continent, have been chasing Gomez, who served his apprenticeship at his local club Barcelona before moving across the city to Espanyol.
technical ability
Martinez is happy to have made his first signing and said: "Jordi is a real quality player. He has a great left foot and is extremely pleasing on the eye as a player.
"I have no doubts in my mind that he will do well in the Premier League. I think he can go all the way in the game, and to play in the Premier League is the next step in his career.
"He is a creative player with fantastic technical ability but he also knows how to look after himself on a football field. He was very popular with the supporters at Swansea and I'm sure that will be the same here.
"To be honest I was surprised we managed to get him at Swansea last season, but now that he is available, he is a player I really wanted to bring on board. He can play in several different positions and will score goals from midfield.
"We are a little light in numbers and I want to press ahead and bring in some more real quality into the squad. You need to have healthy competition for places and we must make sure that the players coming in are of the correct standard and mental attitude for us. Watch this space."
