Aston Villa midfielder Craig Gardner wants to fill the void left by Gareth Barry's departure to Manchester City.
The youngster shone during England Under 21s' 7-0 friendly win over Azerbaijan on Monday, and scored his side's third goal after 31 minutes.
At club level Gardner was very much on the periphery last season as Villa managed to avoid injuries to key players in midfield. But following Barry's defection to City earlier in the month, Gardner has targeted the England star's central midfield position.
reminded him
"I love playing football and I love playing in midfield so hopefully the manager has seen this game (against Azerbaijan) and it's reminded him what I'm about," Gardner said.
"It's nice to hear that some of the fans think I might be able to step into Gareth's shoes and hopefully it happens."
Gardner and the England Under-21s kick-off their European Championship campaign next Monday against Finland.
