Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra with a foot injury.

Aston Villa winger James Milner has been called up from the England Under-21 squad as the replacement for Carrick.

Meanwhile captain Steven Taylor and Danny Welbeck will miss the European Under-21 Championships with injury.

The duo have have been forced to pull out of the England squad for the showpiece event in Sweden

Newcastle defender Taylor has an Achilles problem, while a knee injury sidelines Manchester United forward Welbeck.

Neither player will be on the 23-player final squad list that will be submitted to UEFA on Monday, and replacements will be named.

Stuart Pearce's England youngsters begin their campaign against Finland on June 15 in Halmstad, and also face group matches against Germany and Spain.

Despite the withdrawals, Pearce is looking forward to the competition with genuine optimism.

He said: "I have every confidence in this squad, we are really looking forward to competing with the best Under-21 teams in Europe, and hopefully, doing our country proud with our performances. It should be a fantastic tournament."
