A 3-1 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Barclays Premier League lifted the relegation-threatened Baggies to within three points of fourth-bottom Hull City, although the Tigers currently have a better goal difference.

It was their seventh home win of the season - a record which surpasses all their relegation rivals - and saw West Brom notch up their 26th league goal on home soil. That is a better return than 11 other Barclays Premier League sides, on a par with Aston Villa and just one fewer than Arsenal.

Mowbray's side have lost only one of their last four matches at the Hawthorns and now host Liverpool whose title hopes may be over by the time the match kicks off.

Victory would give Albion the platform for an unlikely Great Escape but they are probably going to need at least four points from their remaining two fixtures at home to Liverpool and away to Blackburn Rovers.

healthier position

"The Premier League is a big ask for us. If we had this group of players at the start of the season I think we would have given ourselves a much better chance," said Mowbray. "I think we can cope with the division. The players who came in last summer are growing into the league and understand the demands of it now.

"Marc-Antoine Fortune and Juan Carlos Menseguez can inflict damage on teams and we didn't have that at the start of the season. It is unfair to say we are playing without fear because we are down and there is no pressure on us because the team is continuing to play the way they always do.

"The frustration for me is we have done enough over the last couple of months to earn a lot more points and be in a healthier position and yet we are where we are. There are two games to go and we'll try to get six points and see where that puts us. The team that is growing into this league may come too late but we'll see after the next two games."
