Steven Thompson struck twice as the Championship side wrote another glorious chapter into a remarkable campaign which saw them go within a whisker of reaching the Carling Cup final.

Winger Wade Elliott opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a superb 20-yard volley and Thompson rifled in a second seven minutes after the restart at a bitterly cold Turf Moor.

Albion were given hope by Gianni Zuiverloon's sweet 60th-minute strike before Thompson netted again to complete a miserable evening for Tony Mowbray's men as Burnley claimed their fourth Barclays Premier League scalp of the season.

It was enough to book a fifth-round trip to Cardiff City or Arsenal whose fourth round replay at the Emirates Stadium was called off on safety grounds because of snow.
