Moyes monitored the progress of the Brazilian before he moved to Manchester City in the summer from CSKA Moscow for a reported £19m.

However, after scoring 44 goals in 77 matches in Russia, the 21-year-old has found the Barclays Premier League a different proposition entirely.

Jo has scored only one goal in the top flight for City but Moyes is hoping a change of scenery will result in a change of fortune for his new recruit.

takes time

Moyes said: "We will try and help Jo get his confidence back. Then hopefully we will be able to get something out of him.

"He has a lot of good things going for him. He is young and will continue to improve. It sometimes takes time for someone from another country to adapt.

"He has not been a success at Manchester City, otherwise we would not be getting him. He is someone I had my eye on long before he went there.

"I thought he could work well in this country. At the moment, that is not the case."
