The team has now been running for over a year and meet twice a week for structured coaching sessions delivered by Bolton Wanderers Football in the Community Department. The ladies all have individual targets such as keeping fit, fighting obesity, networking and improving their game but the main aim of the project has been to make a breakthrough in Bolton by bringing women together to play football.

The group age ranges from 12-34 years old and comprises of women from all walks of life including students, working mothers and housewives. Up to 20 women attend each session and it is open to everyone no matter what community, culture, religious faith group or age they may be.

The name of the project, the 'Bend It like Beckham' football team, was a joint decision by the group and it came from the film which focused on an Asian female playing football and the barriers that she faced.

Muamba's time with the team was spent setting out the equipment for the warm-up, overseeing the coaching session and answering questions from the team about the barriers he has overcome in his football and personal life since arriving in England aged 11 from Democratic Republic of Congo.

England Under-21 international Muamba said: "It's brilliant for the women in Bolton that there is a facility for them to get involved in football regardless of what background they are from- its great that Bolton Wanderers are encouraging these women to get their boots on and show everybody what they can do."

Last year the team made it through to the finals of the BBC national tournament 'Your Game' and played at St Andrews Park. They recently won the BWFC Kick it out Tournament and also play every Thursday in the Bolton Arena ladies league.

The event is in connection with Creating Chances - the Premier League's flagship community programme which engages communities and supporters across the UK. Creating Chances aims to highlight the extensive community work which takes place throughout every season and bring this work to the forefront.
