Luke Young has been exploring the relationship between footballers' and artists' perception of movement and space.
The defender joined forces with students from College High School and Aston Villa's artist in residence, Stephen Farthing to investigate the topic as part of the Premier League's Creating Chances initiative.
As part of an ongoing project between the club, the school and the artist, the students came down to see the match against Middlesbrough, with each student focussing on the action that took place in their chosen part of the pitch. The sketches and drawings from the match will form the foundations for a bigger work of art that will ultimately be put onto canvas.
much detail
While Young was ruled out of the encounter through injury, he watched the match through footballer's eyes and met up with some of the students to discuss how his view of the match differed to theirs. "I was impressed with how much detail they'd captured," said Young. "As artists, they are able to chart purely what they see, so they don't have to worry about any consequences of a move, or who's coming in fast around you.
"When I watched the game, I was thinking about what I'd have done, would it have been different? Could it have affected the outcome perhaps? We watched the same game but I found it very interesting that we remembered the same action and key points of the game, but they recalled a lot more detail than I did."
