Rooney tapped home three minutes before the break after Joe Hart had failed to hold Michael Carrick's angled drive to give the visitors a deserved lead.

But the Red Devils were forced to guide their way to victory without Ronaldo, who was dismissed midway through the second period when he collected a second caution for deliberate handball.
