Liverpool trio Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina and Alarvo Arbeloa were all competeing for Spain, while all of the England team, with the exception of David Beckham, ply their trade in the top-flight.

Beckham equalled Bobby Moore's record number of 108 caps for an outfield player, coming on as a second half substitute. David Villa opened the scoring at Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, then Fernando Llorente replaced Fernando Torres and sealed the friendly win, Fabio Capello's second defeat as England manager.

Tottenham Hotspur's Robbie Keane scored twice for Republic of Ireland after they went 1-0 down at home to Georgia in their World Cup Group Eight qualifying match at Croke Park.

The 28-year-old converted a 73rd-minute penalty and then headed home a winner five minutes later. The win took Giovanni Trapattoni's men level with reigning champions Italy at the top of qualifying Group Eight.

Elsewhere, a Northern Ireland side including Fulham's Aaron Hughes and Sunderland's David Healy comfortably beat San Marino in their World Cup Group Three qualifier. Gareth McAuley, Chris Brunt and Grant McCann were all on target as the province impressed in their away match.

Manchester United's Ji-Sung Park scored for South Korea in their 1-1 away draw with Iran in their World Cup qualifying match.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba scored a last-gasp equaliser for Ivory Coast as they drew 1-1 with Turkey.

Cristiano Ronaldo netted the opener as Portugal beat Finland 1-0. The Manchester United winger scored from the penalty spot in the 79th minute.

Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun grabbed the winner as Israel beat Hungary 1-0.

Portsmouth's Noko Krancjar scored Croatia's second as they secured a 2-1 away win in Romania.

Newcastle United's Jonas Gutierrez netted Argentina's opener in the 40th minute as the South Americans won 2-0 in France.

Tottenham duo Gareth Bale and Chris Gunter, West Ham United's Jack Collison and Manchester City's Craig Bellamy all made the first team as Wales fell 1-0 away to Poland.
