Wigan Athletic's Emile Heskey scored in stoppage-time to snatch all the points away from hosts Portsmouth.
Wigan went ahead seconds before half time when Egyptian goal-ace Amr Zaki fired his ninth of the season from a penalty after Papa Bouba Diop brought down Titus Bramble.
Peter Crouch (twice), Diop and Glen Johnson all hit the woodwork for Pompey and Wilson Palacios and Emmerson Boyce both cleared from the line before substitute Niko Kranjcar rammed an 82nd minute equaliser.
But Pompey had two major escapes in a mad rush for the winner and paid the final price when Heskey slid in Lee Cattermole's through pass.
