Johnson has earned rave reviews since breaking into the City first team two years ago.

And with City on the brink of a new era on the back of an impending takeover by the Abu Dhabi-based United Group for Development and Investment, Johnson has opted to commit his future to the Eastlands outfit.

The deal puts an end to months of speculation regarding the future of the England Under 21 international midfielder, who has committed to the club until 2013.

After breaking in to the first team under then manager Stuart Pearce in 2006, Johnson has attracted interest from several other Barclays Premier League clubs.

Mark Hughes' squad will head to Cyprus for Thursday's UEFA Cup tie against Omonia Nicosia, hoping to have Johnson available.

The 20-year-old missed Saturday's defeat to Chelsea, when he was ruled out with a groin injury.
