Gary Megson admitted it would have been an injustice if his Bolton Wanderers side had pinched a point at Fulham.
The Trotters manager was very disappointed by the display as they went down 2-1 at Craven Cottage.
It was a meeting of two sides who narrowly avoided relegation last season and Megson is hoping it will not prove to be a pointer for this campaign.
looked leggy
While Fulham appear to have rebuilt well, Wanderers struggled to impose themselves and the manager admitted they need to raise their game.
He said: "We have four points from four games and if we maintain that ratio we will flirt with relegation.
"We have got to start putting points on the board. We have got to become a lot harder to play against and to start going after teams a lot more.
"We looked leggy and did not go about the game in the right manner.
"We did not play at all well and made life easy for them. It would have been hard on Fulham if we had got a point.
"I saw few positives. Kevin Davies and Ricardo Gardner played well but aside from that a lot of people we not at their best and when you get that, you are not going to win many games.
"We did have opportunities. Kevin Davies had a chance when he put it over the top and he had a great effort when he chipped Mark Schwarzer from distance but we are not putting enough people in the box. We have spoken about that. We can't rely on the same people to get goals for us.
"We had a few players missing but it irks me that when you have a full squad you get players asking why they are not in the team but when their chance comes they do not take it."
"There were certainly a few below-par performances and the goals we conceded were poor at this level. Fulham were quicker to the ball and they do keep it well in midfield but we played into their hands."
