Blackburn Rovers overcame the shock of going a goal down inside seven minutes to exert their Barclays Premier League class and see off League Two outfit Grimsby Town to advance to the third round of the Carling Cup.

The visitors grabbed a deserved early lead through Tom Newey's curling free-kick. However, after striker Carlos Villanueva found an equaliser within 10 minutes that his lively debut deserved, Rovers emphasised their superiority thanks to further first-half goals from Matt Derbyshire and Brett Emerton.

A last-minute goal from Danny Murphy gave Fulham a 3-2 success over Leicester City. Zoltan Gera put the hosts in front, but the Foxes went ahead through Paul Dickov and Andy King. Jimmy Bullard levelled the scores at 2-2 late on before Murphy's 90th minute winner.

Sunderland needed extra-time to dispose of Nottingham Forest with a 2-1 victory. Robert Earnshaw put Forest ahead with a fine free-kick only to see Phil Bardsley equalise in the closing stages. Substitute David Healy sealed the Black Cats' passage to the third round in extra time.

West Ham United survived a major shock by beating Macclesfield 4-1 in extra time. Hammers star Lee Bowyer cancelled out Gareth Evans' early strike to send the tie to extra time. Then Carlton Cole, Kyel Hines and Zavon Reid made the scoreline comfortable in the extra 30 minutes.
