Barclays Premier League clubs had mixed fortunes in the Carling Cup second round.
Michael Owen's finish in extra-time gave Newcastle United a 3-2 win over Coventry City. The Magpies opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal from City defender Scott Dann then a strike from James Milner. But Clinton Morrison pulled one back and Dann made ammends for his own goal by heading a stoppage time equaliser for 2-2, before Owen's extra-time winner.
Middlesbrough made light work of Yeovil, winning 5-1 against the League One outfit. Mido, Didier Digard, Jeremie Aliadiere, Marvin Emnes and Adam Johnson got Boro's goals with Gavin Tomlin netting for the Glovers.

Stoke City ran out 3-2 winners against Cheltenham, despite making 10 changes from Saturday's Barclays Premier League win over Aston Villa.
Glenn Whelan's free-kick put them in front and Richard Cresswell added a second before Ashley Vincent pulled a goal back for Cheltenham. Jon Parkin made it 3-1, while Alex Russell added a late consolation for Cheltenham.
Wigan Athletic cruised into the third round with a 4-0 triumph over Notts County. Henri Camara grabbed a brace with Kevin Kilbane and Tomasz Kupisz completing the scoring.
West Bromwich Albion crashed out of the cup with a 3-1 extra-time defeat at Hartlepool. Joel Porter gave Hartlepool the lead, but on 87 minutes Robert Koren equalised for West Brom. Hartlepool's David Foley then scored on 102 minutes and Richie Barker headed in three minutes later to secure a famous victory.
League One side Northampton sent Bolton Wanderers out of the cup with a 2-1 win. Adebayo Akinfenwa put Northampton 2-0 ahead before Kevin Nolan grabbed a consolation.
Swansea City knocked out Hull City 2-1 after extra time. Dean Windass opened the scoring for Hull only for Gorka Pintado to equalise for the Swans. Jordi Gomez's extra-time penalty sealed the win.
