Pompey were taken apart in the first half at Stamford Bridge, with Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka scoring before Lampard netted from the penalty spot, a goal in his first match since signing a new five-year contract last week.

The win got manager Luiz Felipe Scolari's reign off to a flying start and Lampard said: "We can build on that. The first half was as good as we can play.

"Having not won anything last year we go in (to this season) with a real determination and I think we showed that.

"We just wanted to play as well as we can. We wanted to start all guns blazing. Last year we had a difficult start and the football we played in the first half was top drawer."

Chelsea could have added more in the second half before Deco, on his debut, scored from long range in the 89th minute to cap off a man-of-the-match display.

Lampard was impressed with his fellow midfielder, and said: "It's not easy to come to a different country and settle in as quickly as he has. His touch is fantastic and he's obviously going to be a great signing for us."
