The England Under-21 international has been linked with several clubs, but Hughes has made it clear the midfielder is an important part of his future plans.

"We have had no enquiries for him and Michael is a big part of what we want to do here," Hughes told the club's official website.

"He has great potential and it doesn't surprise me that good players like him should attract interest from elsewhere,

"My stance with Michael is that we very much want him to stay and hopefully we can resolve his contract very quickly."

Johnson impressed in the heart of City's midfield at the start of last season before an abdominal injury forced him to miss a large part of the campagin. He went on to make an encouraging return to the first-team towards the end of the season.
