The Frenchman has been in Switzerland watching Euro 2008, and said before the tournament that he has an open mind about signing players who have impressed him.

However, Wenger has now stressed that he is unlikely to recruit many of the players on show and will instead concentrate on keeping the current squad together.

"I brought my cheque-book (to Euro 2008) but, having looked at the prices, I've realised it isn't big enough," he said.

"I've not been surprised by the quality on show. There is a fantastic young generation of players coming through.

"But I will use my cheque-book first to keep the players I already have."

Full-backs Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna recently signed contract extensions with the club.

Wenger is still expected to strengthen his squad, with Aaron Ramsey having already arrived from Cardiff City and Mexican youngster Carlos Vela returning from his loan spell at Osasuna.
