The defender recently underwent surgery on an ankle injury and hopes to be ready for next season.

Baines has made only 17 starts for the Toffees in all competitions after joining the club from Wigan Athletic last season.

Groin, hamstring and ankle problems have contributed to his lack of involvement, but he also found it hard to force his way into David Moyes' plans when available for selection.

"Even though I was available for a lot of games it was still causing me a bit of trouble," said Baines. "So it is nice to get it done and hopefully get back fully fit. It's something that has been hampering me for a while.

"I'm a couple of weeks down the line since the surgery so I'm just coming in and starting my rehab.

"I'm getting the movement back in my ankle and hopefully over the next couple of weeks I can progress a little bit further."

He added: "I played probably more games than people might think, but it would be nice to hopefully get back fully fit and be considered more often."
