Wigan Athletic left-back Erik Edman is set to be out for six months after rupturing knee ligaments.
The Latics confirmed the extent of the damage today, after the defender was injured in last weekend's Barclays Premier League match at Blackburn Rovers.
The Swede ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee. He will return to Sweden for surgery soon.
Wigan manager Steve Bruce must now consider how to cover for Edman, though Kevin Kilbane would appear to be the most obvious candidate to fill in at left-back.
TERRIFIC PROFESSIONAL
"It's a real shame, because Erik has looked so natural - and we will certainly miss him," Bruce said.
"He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional. But he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure. Everyone at the club wishes him the best."
A club statement added: "It is a big blow for both club and player, because Edman has been in sensational form since breaking into the side following his January move from Rennes."
