The visitors had the better of the first half, with Peter Crouch heading wide (14), shooting wide of the upright (17) and steering a header straight at Petr Cech from Steven Gerrard's right-wing cross on 19.

The second half was largely uneventful until the last 10 minutes, with Michael Ballack volleying wide of the upright from Ashley Cole's clever cross on 81.
