Sunderland have signed defender Phil Bardsley from Manchester United on a three-and-a-half-year contract.
The right-back, who had a loan spell at Sheffield United earlier this season, has joined in a deal worth up to £2million.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane said: "We needed to strengthen our defence and Phil is a good addition to the squad."
Bardsley added on the club's website: "Sunderland have a fantastic manager who has given me the chance to come here and play.
good opportunity
"I'm delighted, it's a massive club and a good opportunity."
Bardsley becomes the Black Cat's third new addition of the January transfer window, following the arrival of United team-mate Jonny Evans on loan and French youngster Jean-Yves M'voto from Paris St Germain.
The 22-year-old Englishman has had loan spells with Royal Antwerp, Burnley, Rangers, Sheffield United and Aston Villa during his career with United.
