Middlesbrough have announced the signing of Sporting Gijon defender Bernardo Espinosa.

The 26-year-old Colombian has agreed a three-year deal and will join up with Boro on 1 July when his deal with Sporting Gijon expires.

Espinosa began his senior career at Sevilla, making his La Liga debut in May 2011, and after a loan spell at Racing Santander, moved to Sporting Gijon in 2013.

Last season he made 16 appearances and scored one goal as Sporting Gijon finished just outside the relegation zone.

The centre-half is Middlesbrough's second signing since they won promotion to the top-flight with Ajax winger Viktor Fischer already confirmed.

He could make his Premier League debut against Stoke City at home on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Middlesbrough open their pre-season campaign against York City on 9 July.
