With the start of the 2023/24 season less than a week away, we look at the big questions for the campaign ahead.

How will promoted clubs fare?

The three promoted clubs Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town have a chance to make history in Matchweek 1. Never before have all three promoted clubs won their opening match.

But no matter what happens on the opening weekend, the trio can take heart from the events of last season when all three promoted clubs - Fulham, AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest - secured their Premier League status for the 2023/24 campaign.

Each of three sides have faced differing challenges to their squad-building over the summer.

Burnley have brought in eight players so far, including Switzerland striker Zeki Amdouni from Basel, but were unable to retain left-back Ian Maatsen and top scorer Nathan Tella, who starred while on loan from Chelsea and Southampton respectively last season.

Amdouni could be key to replacing Tella, after scoring 12 times in the Swiss Super League and hitting five goals in four matches for Switzerland in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Sheff Utd manager Paul Heckingbottom has seen his attacking plans disrupted by the departure of top scorer Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille in the past week, with only four players brought in so far.

Luton, in their first season in the Premier League, have been slightly busier, retaining the crux of the squad that won promotion, as well as bringing in players such as Issa Kabore on loan from Manchester City and Marvelous Nakamba from Aston Villa.

But the scale of the redevelopment of Kenilworth Road could put the team on the back foot early on.

Opponents won’t have to brave the famous atmosphere of “the Kenny” until September at least, as the Hatters start their top-flight adventure with trips to Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea
