Man Utd's Owen out until Christmas

Injury-hit striker faces six-week lay-off with thigh problem

Michael Owen's first-team opportunities at Old Trafford have been limited this season

Manchester United striker Michael Owen will miss the next six weeks as he recovers from his thigh injury.

Owen sustained the problem in the Champions League match against Otelul Galati at Old Trafford at the beginning of November.

And the 31-year-old is not expected to return until Christmas at the earliest, with United suggesting the Boxing Day fixture against Wigan Athletic as a possible date for his comeback.

A Club spokesman told United's official website: "Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so.

The injury is another setback for Owen, who has been plagued by injuries in his career.

The former Liverpool and Newcastle star dismissed suggestions he could retire at the end of this season when his United contract expires.
