"Having had a similar injury to his left knee in 2010, Emmanuel will see specialists in London over the next few days before having surgery and starting a programme of rehabilitation," read an Arsenal statement.

"Emmanuel is expected to be out for a number of months and will therefore miss the remainder of this season.

"Everyone at Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers wish Emmanuel a swift recovery."

Frimpong made 14 appearances for Arsenal this campaign before being loaned to Wolves at the end of December.

He impressed in his five-match spell at Molineux and was set to have been a key part of the club's attempt to avoid relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

On his official Twitter account, Frimpong said: "I want to thank all the Wolves fans for their support since I've been here and really hope Wolves stay up this season."
