Manchester United look to stretch unbeaten record against Swansea

The omens look good for Louis van Gaal's side as they start 2014/15 season at Old Trafford

Robin van Persie scored twice in Man Utd's opening day win at Swansea last season

Louis van Gaal will be looking to extend Manchester United's unbeaten Barclays Premier League record against Swansea City when he takes charge of the Red Devils for the first time in their 2014/15 season opener at Old Trafford.

United have only dropped two points in their last six meetings with the Welsh side, and they also started the 2013/14 campaign with a 4-1 triumph against the Swans at the Liberty Stadium.

Premierleague.com looks at the opening fixtures for the 2014/15 Barclays Premier League season for the weekend starting 16 August and picks out the key facts and figures of past clashes in those encounters.

Arsenal v Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will be looking to end a run of three consecutive Barclays Premier League defeats away to Arsenal when they visit Emirates Stadium. The Eagles’ last success in north London was in October 1994, when two John Salako goals gave them a shock win at Highbury. That was their only win in 10 meetings between the two sides in the competition, with Arsenal coming out on top in seven.  In the 2013/14 campaign, Arsenal won both fixtures 2-0.

Both sides will be looking for an upturn in their form for opening weekends. Arsenal have won none of their past four opening weekend fixtures - last season they were beaten at home 3-1 by Aston Villa - while Palace have won one of their five opening Barclays Premier League matches.

Burnley v Chelsea

Chelsea boast a perfect record against Burnley in the Barclays Premier League, having taken maximum points in both meetings during the Clarets’ debut season in 2009/10. A late goal from John Terry gave the Blues a 2-1 win at Turf Moor in August 2009, while the 2009/10 champions secured a comfortable 3-0 success at Stamford Bridge, with Nicolas Anelka, Michael Ballack and Ashley Cole on target.

Chelsea's opening-day record is another good omen for Jose Mourinho's side. Chelsea have won 47 points from opening Barclays Premier League fixtures, more than any other side in the competition's history. Burnley's only previous opener was a 2-0 defeat by Stoke City.

Leicester City v Everton

Little has separated Leicester City and Everton in their previous meetings in the Barclays Premier League after four consecutive top-flight draws at the home of the Foxes. In total, the two clubs have drawn 11 of their 16 Barclays Premier League meetings, while Everton have won four of the other five encounters. Leicester, who return to the Barclays Premier League for the first time since 2003/04, will be looking to emulate their only previous win against Everton in the competition, when Tony Cottee and Muzzy Izzett ensured they won their opening home match of the 1997/98 campaign.

Liverpool v Southampton

Southampton were one of two sides to record away victories at Anfield in the Barclays Premier League last season and will be looking to repeat their 1-0 success against Liverpool last time round in Ronald Koeman’s first match in charge.

Dejan Lovren scored the only goal in September 2013 for a side featuring Rickie Lambert, who is now a Liverpool player. Overall Anfield has been a fortress when Southampton have visited and Liverpool will be searching for their 10th Barclays Premier League home win against the Saints. The only other victory for Southampton in this fixture was when David Hirst scored a last-gasp winner in a five-goal thriller during the 1997/98 campaign.

This will be the second time that the two sides have faced each other on the opening weekend of the season. The previous occasion was in August 1998, when Michael Owen sealed a 2-1 success at The Dell.

Manchester United v Swansea City

Louis van Gaal faces an Old Trafford meeting with Swansea City in his first competitive match as Manchester United manager. The contest is a reverse of United's opening encounter of the 2013/14 campaign. Then under the tutelage of David Moyes, United got off to a flying start with a 4-1 victory, with Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck scoring twice each.

Swansea were also the opponents when Sir Alex Ferguson took charge of United at Old Trafford for the final time . That day, Rio Ferdinand struck a late winner as they celebrated winning the 2012/13 title.

United are unbeaten in Barclays Premier League meetings with Swansea. The Welsh club have won only a point from their six meetings, at the Liberty Stadium in December 2012.

Newcastle United v Manchester City

Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City will have the opportunity to open their defence with a 10th consecutive League victory against Newcastle United.

The record stretches back to October 2008, and their last league defeat by Newcastle came in September 2005, when Michael Owen struck the only goal for the Magpies. That was the end of a good record for Newcastle in the Barclays Premier League against Man City, winning six of their opening eight home meetings with the Citizens following the league’s start.

These two sides also met on the opening weekend of the 2013/14 season, with Man City winning 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium and recording their fourth successive clean sheet against the Magpies in all competitions.

Queens Park Rangers v Hull City

Queens Park Rangers, who were promoted via the Championship play-offs, will face Hull City in the Barclays Premier League for the first time at Loftus Road.

There has been little to choose between the two sides in their last eight meetings in English football’s second tier. Five of those encounters have been draws, while QPR came out on top in two of those matches.

The last time QPR hosted Hull they drew 1-1 as Rangers closed in on the Championship title in the 2010/11 season. In the Barclays Premier League, QPR are looking for their first opening-day victory in seven seasons while Hull have got off to a winning start once in three top-flight campaigns, when they beat Fulham 2-1 in August 2008.

Stoke City v Aston Villa

Stoke City's first Barclays Premier League home match was a last-gasp 3-2 win over Aston Villa and the two sides will meet at the Britannia Stadium with the Potters boast an impressive record against the West Midlands side. Mark Hughes's team have won five and drawn six of their 12 Barclays Premier League meetings with Villa. The only defeat was a memorable one for Villa fans as Matthew Lowton scored a sensational volleyed winner in the 2012/13 season.

Former Aston Villa frontman Peter Crouch will be looking to score against his old club for the third consecutive match. His previous two strikes came in home and away wins over Villa last season.

West Bromwich Albion v Sunderland

There has been plenty of entertainment in recent meetings between West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland, with their last seven Barclays Premier League meetings producing a total of 27 goals. West Brom have come out on top in five of those matches, although Sunderland tasted victory in their most recent encounter, winning 2-0 in May.

The Baggies are the form side in this match-up, and a 4-0 rout in February 2012 was one of five consecutive home victories against Sunderland. If they pick up a sixth straight Hawthorns triumph against Sunderland, they will record only their second win in nine opening-day fixtures in the Barclays Premier League. Sunderland boast a 31% win percentage from 12 league openers. One man who flourishes in this fixture is West Brom midfielder Stephane Sessegnon, who has scored in two of the last three meetings, one for the Baggies and one as a Sunderland player.

West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur

In his 400th match as a Barclays Premier League manager, Sam Allardyce will be hoping to continue West Ham United’s recent hold over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. West Ham won both league meetings last season, including a 3-0 success at White Hart Lane, and knocked Spurs out of the Capital One Cup at the same ground. New Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to reverse the trend in his first match in charge since joining from Southampton.

Spurs’ last league win against West Ham came at the Boleyn Ground, when Gareth Bale netted the winner with a long-range strike in the last moments of the match. Bale was also on target in the reverse fixture as the north Londoners did the double over West Ham in 2012/13, and Spurs have the upper hand in overall Barclays Premier League matches between the two sides, winning half of the 36 meetings.
