Manchester United have made their second signing in as many days with the capture of left-back Luke Shaw from Southampton.

The 18-year-old, who was part of England's FIFA World Cup squad in Brazil, has signed for United on a four-year contract with an option to extend for a further year.

"I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United," he told the Man Utd website. "I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.

"I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club."

Shaw became a key part of Southampton's first team following the club's return to the Barclays Premier League in 2012. He made his top-flight debut against West Bromwich Albion in the November of that year and has become of the most highly rated young players in the league. In total, Shaw made 60 Barclays Premier League appearances for Southampton.

"Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential," said United assistant manager Ryan Giggs. "He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise."

While the cost of the sale was undisclosed, Southampton revealed that the deal represents the highest transfer fee received by the club.

"While we are sad to see Luke depart the club, we fought to ensure that we got the right deal for a player in whom we have invested a great deal of work over the past decade," Southampton executive director Les Reed told the club website. "Luke's transfer fee will be reinvested into the team as our new manager, Ronald Koeman, builds for the new season and for years to come."

Shaw joins midfielder Ander Herrera in joining new manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer.
