Fernando completes Manchester City transfer

Champions strengthen squad with signing of Brazilian defensive midfielder from FC Porto

Fernando has joined Manchester City after seven seasons at FC Porto

Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City have made their second signing of the summer with the capture of midfielder Fernando from Portuguese side FC Porto.

The 26-year-old Brazilian, who won four league titles and a UEFA Europa League during his seven seasons in Portugal, normally operates as a defensive midfielder and will wear the No 6 shirt at Etihad Stadium next season.

"I am so happy to finally be joining Manchester City," he told the club website. "I know there was talk of me possibly signing last January so I am delighted that the deal has now been done and that I am a City player.

"I'm looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and helping City to defend the title. It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League.

"City fans can be assured I will give my all every time I play and I'm looking forward to many happy years in Manchester. I have enjoyed my stay with Porto and I thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Portugal. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career."

Fernando, who will join up with his new team-mates for pre-season training in two-weeks’ time, joins full-back Bacary Sagna in moving to the club this summer.

Manuel Pellegrini's squad begin the defence of their title at Newcastle United on 16 August. For a full list of City's League fixtures, click here, while you can find out their pre-season schedule here.
