Sunderland swoop for Chelsea defender Van Aanholt

23-year-old Netherlands international moves to Stadium of Light on four-year deal

Patrick van Aanholt has been capped twice by the Netherlands

Sunderland have completed the signing of left-back Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

The Netherlands international, who has been capped twice by his country and was named in Louis van Gaal's 30-man provisional squad ahead of this summer's FIFA World Cup, has joined the Black Cats on a four-year deal.

The 23-year-old has five Barclays Premier League appearances to his name, has gained UEFA Champions League experience while with the Blues and has spent the last two seasons on loan with Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse, where he also played in the UEFA Europa League.  

The defender becomes the Wearsiders' fourth summer signing, following the arrivals of Billy Jones, Costel Pantilimon and Jordi Gomez.

Sunderland, who are enjoying a pre-season tour of the United States, are action tonight against Philadelphia Union. To find a list of their pre-season matches click here >>
