Manchester City were defeated in their opening pre-season friendly as Manuel Pellegrini played a different side in either half at Dens Park.
City, who paraded the Barclays Premier League trophy they won in May to the 6,859 supporters present, found it hard going against a Scottish Premiership side who were all the sharper for having begun their own pre-season a fortnight ago.
Pellegrini, who gave new signings Willy Caballero and Fernando their first-team debuts, found his side two goals down by half-time, but Caballero was unfortunate to see his penalty save from Gary Harkins on 26 minutes result in the striker scoring from the rebound.
Eleven minutes later and the Barclays Premier League champions, who were without a number of players away on FIFA World Cup duty, including three players preparing to appear in the final later in the evening, were 2-0 behind when Luka Tankulic's effort deflected past the wrong-footed Argentinian goalkeeper.
Although half-time substitutes Alvaro Negredo and Samir Nasri threatened in the second period, Dundee held on for the win. City will continue their Scottish tour with a match against Heart of Midlothian on Friday, 18 July.
