Manchester City earned their first point of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League Division 1 season against Sunderland, with Jordy Hiwula striking for City and Duncan Watmore responding for the Black Cats, while Middlesbrough registered their first win of the Division 2 season against debutants Brighton & Hove Albion.

Division 1

Manchester City 1-1 Sunderland

Manchester City bounced back from a narrow opening-day defeat by the champions Chelsea to register their first point of the season against Sunderland at Ewen Fields.

Duncan Watmore nearly put the visiting side ahead after capitalising on a misplaced pass at the back, but the Sunderland winger dragged his shot wide eight minutes in. City controlled possession following Sunderland's early chance and profited from their good play on 25 minutes when Hiwula converted Sinan Bytyqi's slide-rule pass.

Hiwula had a chance to grab a second but fired straight at Sunderland goalkeeper Maksymillian Stryjek. Sunderland profited from this missed chance as Watmore latched on to a long ball forward, rounded City goalkeeper Angus Gunn and slotted home to make it 1-1 at half-time.

Sunderland pushed for a second after the break while Bytyqi forced a fine save from Stryjek with 23 minutes remaining, but neither side could snatch a winner.

Division 2

Middlesbrough 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Strikes from Tom McAloon and Andy Halliday either side of half-time gave Middlesbrough their first victory of the campaign against newcomers Brighton & Hove Albion at Rockliffe.

The hosts, who lost to Derby County in their opening fixture, controlled possession in the first half and, after Lewis Maloney had fired a free-kick narrowly wide and Luke Williams had gone close, took the lead on 37 minutes when McAloon slotted home from close range after good work from Callum Cooke.

Cooke was the architect once more as Boro doubled their advantage three minutes after the interval. With a shooting opportunity on the edge of the penalty area, Cooke instead teed up Halliday, who struck well to make it 2-0.

Brighton responded with James Muitt finding the net three minutes later, and substitute Jason David inspired a late rally from the Seagulls, while Boro also went close to adding a third late on as Williams sent a lob just over the crossbar.
