BU21PL: Santos spot on as Derby draw at Arsenal

Alefe Santos cancels out Ainsley Maitland-Niles' opener as Derby and Arsenal remain unbeaten

  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles put Arsenal ahead, sliding home a Kristoffer Olsson through-ball

  • Alefe Santos (left) earned Derby a draw with an 81st-minute penalty kick

  • Chuba Akpom (right) and Maitland-Niles went close to restoring Arsenal's lead

After opening their campaigns in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League Division 2 with wins, Arsenal and Derby County were forced to share the spoils as Alefe Santos's penalty for the Rams cancelled out Ainsley Maitland-Niles' opener.

Arsenal 1-1 Derby County

Alefe Santos converted a penalty kick nine minutes from time to earn Derby a 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Meadow Park.

Derby achieved Category One status in the summer and came into the match on a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough in their Barclays U21 Premier League Division 2 opener against Arsenal, who also won their first match of the campaign against 2013/14 U21 Premier League Cup winners Reading.

In a closely contested first half, Derby’s Tom Naylor fired over from close range in the first clear-cut opening on 18 minutes, before Chuba Akpom was off target after clever build-up play by the hosts. Arsenal had opportunities to go ahead but Akpom hit a post and Daniel Crowley blazed over from six yards.

After the break, moments after Derby’s Kwame Thomas had headed wide from close range, Kristoffer Olsson played in Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who slid the ball under goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell to put Arsenal in front.

Jamie Hanson went close with a dipping free-kick as the visitors pushed for an equaliser. They got it when Santos scored from the spot after Arsenal substitute Alex Iwobi upended Kieran Freeman inside the box.

Arsenal came close to snatching a winner as Maitland-Niles had an effort saved by Mitchell then Akpom’s chip went wide but the two teams were forced to share the points.
