BU21PL: Last-gasp McLaughlin earns Liverpoool victory

Northern Ireland international scores added-time winner to earn Liverpool narrow win at Sunderland

Ryan McLaughlin scored Liverpool's late winner at Sunderland

Liverpool got their Barclays U21 Premier League Division 1 campaign off to a winning start with a last-gasp victory over Sunderland at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground on Tuesday night.

First Division

Sunderland 0-1 Liverpool

An added-time goal by Ryan McLaughlin ensured Michael Beale's first match in charge of Liverpool's U21s ended in a 1-0 win over Sunderland.

In their opening Barclays U21 Premier League Division 1 match of the 2014-15 season a lively encounter at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground witnessed chances for both sides, although it appeared as though the match would end in a goalless affair.

However, with 91 minutes on the clock, McLaughlin burst into the area from the left and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to secure a dramatic victory for last year's BU21 Premier League play-off semi-finalists.

The encounter sprung into life on the half-hour mark when Liverpool's Sheyi Ojo delivered an inviting centre that Cameron Brannagan was unfortunate not to convert, while at the other end, an inventive passage of play from Sunderland required a fine challenge from summer arrival Kevin Stewart to thwart Liam Agnew on the edge of the six-yard box.

The hosts might have been ahead had Duncan Watmore's side-footed connection with Andrew Cartwright's pinpoint delivery been goalbound and, seven minutes after the interval, the Black Cats again surged forward after Cabral slipped Mikael Mandron into space, only for the forward's low drive to be repelled by the boot of Danny Ward.

In an open contest Liverpool then came close when Kris Peterson pounced on a wayward ball from Cabral only to be thwarted by Maksymilian Stryjek, while his opposite number Ward again kept the Reds in the contest by denying Watmore with an outstretched glove on 74 minutes after the striker had raced clear on goal.

With time ebbing away, McLaughlin brought an acrobatic stop out of Stryjek after cutting in from the left and letting fly with a right-foot curler, but the Northern Ireland full-back would not be denied and in the final throes of the match dispatched a loose ball into the bottom corner to seal a last-gasp victory.

Liverpool are back in action on Friday night at Anfield against their great rivals Manchester United in a match that will be televised live on BT Sport 2.
