Division 2

Arsenal 4-2 West Bromwich Albion

Chuba Akpom scored a hat-trick as Arsenal continued their unbeaten start to the season and went top of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League Division 2 with a 4-2 victory against West Bromwich Albion at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

The product of the Arsenal academy was joined by Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell in the front-line for the Gunners, while Abou Diaby played the first 45 minutes in his bid for fitness alongside Francis Coquelin in midfield.

It took just three minutes for Arsenal to open the scoring as Dan Crowley scored with an excellent free-kick. Campbell curled a shot just wide and Diaby fired over as the hosts controlled the early exchanges in front of 1,469 spectactors, and they doubled their advantage when Akpom tapped in after Semi Ajayi’s powerful shot had been saved.

Adil Nabi twice went close for West Brom in the latter stages of the first half, but Isaac Hayden and Campbell threatened from distance after the interval and Akpom added his second with a towering header from Hector Bellerin’s delivery.

Akpom completed his hat-trick after firing home Campbell’s lobbed pass seven minutes later, before West Brom rallied with Kyle Howkins converting Rees Wedderburn's corner and Kemar Roofe lobbing Arsenal goalkeeper Deyan Iliev with the last kick of the match.

Arsenal have seven points from three matches after drawing with Derby County and beating Reading 1-0.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 Bolton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers registered their first victory of the 2014/15 campaign on Wednesday thanks to a first-half strike from George Swan.

The defender opened the scoring at Bucks Head on 12 minutes when he volleyed in from close range after Albert Torras fired in a low cross after a corner had not been cleared.

In the early stages of a lively encounter, Connor Hunte saw his shot deflected wide for the hosts, while Rob Hall struck a free-kick narrowly wide from distance.

Wolves’ Eusebio Bancessi and Bolton captain Georg Iliev both went close within minutes, and Hall and Tom Youngs had opportunities to level for the visitors before half-time.

Ibrahim Keita and Jim Kellerman almost added a second for Wolves after the break, while Ben O’Hanlon hit a post, but it remained 1-0 and Wolves have three points from their opening two matches.
