The 2012/13 Barclay Premier League season was a record in terms of adult and junior supporters buying full season tickets.
Total adult season ticket sales for last season were 476,776, beating the previous best in 2007/08 of 476,267. The 2012/13 figure is a 7% increase on 2004/05, the first season that the Premier League started compiling season ticket data.
There were particularly strong results in junior season tickets sales, with 58,546 sold during the 2012/13 campaign. Before last season the record for junior season ticket sales was 2008/09, when 58,313 were purchased. There has been a 26% increase in junior ticket sales across the Premier League since 2004/05.
The records are a result of clubs taking steps to encourage juniors and families through the turnstiles. Everton, for example, introduced a £95 season ticket for under-11s during the 2012/13 season and a £149 ticket for those aged 12-16. Thanks to these measures, the number of under-16s securing a full season ticket at Goodison Park rose 39%.
Newcastle United claim to have Europe's largest family enclosure area for 2013/14 after extending it to a capacity of almost 8,200. They have introduced a combined adult and child season ticket costing £483. If supporters sign up to a 10-year deal, which freezes the price of their ticket for 10 years and offers them the option to leave the agreement at the end of any season without penalty, the ticket is £417 for the two each season. Newcastle are now almost at full occupancy in the family enclosure area.
Aston Villa have also introduced a special offer in family season tickets for two adults and two children. A combined season ticket for two adults and two children under the age of eight start at £650, and the equivalent package for two children under 16 costs from £695. These tickets work out to £8.55 per person per game for families with the under-8 tickets and £9.14 for those with children under 16.
This season Arsenal launched the "Young Guns Enclosure", an area for supporters aged 12-16 with access to 1,000 tickets to every weekend category B and C Barclays Premier League match for a fixed price of £10.
"Making football more attractive and more affordable for families is something clubs have worked hard at over the last few years," Cathy Long, the Premier League's Head of Supporter Services, said. "Premier League football is increasingly a family affair – 29% of fans attend with children, and the clubs are doing a better job in making football more accessible to them. In 2009, 76% of parents thought clubs catered well for their need, but that had increased to 87% last season."
