Southampton stunned leaders Liverpool with a 1-0 victory at Anfield, as Dejan Lovren scored the only goal from a corner.

At the Boleyn Ground Everton fought back from 2-1 down to beat West Ham United 3-2 thanks to two free-kicks from Leighton Baines. Ravel Morrison put West Ham in the lead before Baines's first free-kick but the home side regained the lead from a penalty by Mark Noble, who was later sent off for two yellow cards. Baines levelled for a second time before substitute Romelu Lukaku's header sealed the fightback.

Hull City also won 3-2 having been 2-1 down away to Newcastle United. Loic Remy had given the home side the lead twice, but Robbie Brady then Ahmed Elmohamady each equalised before Sone Aluko came off the bench to score the winner for Steve Bruce's side.

Sunderland remain bottom of the table after going down 3-0 to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns. Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring against the side he left in the summer before Liam Ridgewell doubled the lead midway the second half. Morgan Amalfitano sealed the win with a late goal. By then things had got worse for Sunderland head coach Paolo Di Canio as his team were reduced to 10 men when, with all the substitutions made, Steven Fletcher had to go off with a shoulder injury.

In the evening match, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea returned to winning ways and moved, temporarily at least, to the top of the Barclays Premier League table with a 2-0 victory at home to Fulham. Oscar's strike and a first league goal for Jon Obi Mikel secured the three points at Stamford Bridge.

In the early kick-off Aston Villa earned their second victory of the season with a 1-0 win at Norwich City. Libor Kozak got the only goal, shortly after coming on for an injured Christian Benteke.
