Barclays U21s: Moncur on a roll for the Hammers

Midfielder scores again as West Ham defeat Stoke City while Saints overcome Aston Villa

  • George Moncur's goal helped West Ham United go top of the table

  • Jordan Turnbull scored the final goal in Southampton's victory

Stoke City 0-1 West Ham United

George Moncur scored his third goal in as many matches to give West Ham United victory at the Britannia Stadium.

The 20-year-old midfielder scored on 15 minutes when he turned in a cut back from the impressive Blair Turgott. Dylan Tombides almost made it two soon afterwards but his shot hit the post.

The hosts, who had Brek Shea, Maurice Edu and Jamie Ness in their starting line-up, could not find a way through the Hammers defence, with goalkeeper Stephen Henderson saving from George Waring and Adam Thomas.

The Hammers are now level on points with leaders Fulham, having played one match more.

Southampton 3-1 Aston Villa

Southampton claimed their second win in a row as they defeated Aston Villa at St Mary's Stadium.

Omar Rowe put the home side ahead when he chested down Jake Sinclair's cross and fired home on 38 minutes before Kevin Toner's own goal doubled the advantage seven minutes after the interval.

Daniel Johnson pulled a goal back for Villa when, after testing goalkeeper Chris Johns with two shots from outside the area, he pounced on a defensive mix-up to stroke home with his left foot.

Villa piled on the pressure as they tried to get an equalizer but it was Saints who had the final say, Jordan Turnbull heading in from Harrison Read's corner.
