Luis Alberto scored a second-half hat-trick to help give Liverpool victory over Barclays Under-21 Premier League leaders Sunderland in front of the watching Brendan Rodgers, Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and England Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate at Anfield.
Sunderland, who had won their opening four matches of the season, went two goals ahead through Alex Gorrin and David Moberg Karlsson but the home side equalised with low drives from Jack Dunn and Alberto.
Raheem Sterling's effort just went over the line to hand Liverpool the lead before Alberto made it four when he headed home at the second attempt after his first shot was blocked while he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Sterling was brought down in the area.
Defender Tiago Ilori made his Reds debut in the contest following his summer signing from Sporting Lisbon.
