Barclays has announced that David Shopland has won the Barclays Photographer of the Season award, honouring the best Barclays Premier League photographer during the 2012/13 season.

"Capturing iconic moments from the Barclays Premier League is one of my great passions"
David Shopland

Shopland, a photographer for the Mail on Sunday, submitted a portfolio of five images from the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League season, including an iconic shot of Sir Alex Ferguson celebrating his 13th and final Barclays Premier League Trophy after beating Swansea City 2-1 at home on 12 May 2013. He also included shots such as Gary Cahill’s celebration for Chelsea after a stunning volley against Tottenham Hotspur and an image of Yaya Toure during the Manchester Derby at Etihad Stadium.

"It's an unbelievable honour to have been named Barclays Photographer of the Season," Shopland said. "Capturing iconic moments from the Barclays Premier League is one of my great passions – it's not just a job – so to be recognised for my work is fantastic. It's great to be acknowledged in this way by the Barclays Photographic Awards."

Adrian Dennis, of AFP, has claimed the Barclays Shot of the Season award, honouring the best individual photograph taken during the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League season. Dennis's photograph shows the Arsenal team celebrating Laurent Koscielny's late equaliser against Manchester City in September. The shot captures the sheer passion and joy that the Barclays Premier League represents and was highly rated by the judges.

"I'm thrilled to win the Barclays Shot of the Season award," Dennis said. "It's known to be one of the highest-regarded competitions for sports photographers to enter. For me, the winning shot brings to life the true spirit of the game, and the elation from the players is infectious."

The judging panel included UK Picture Editors' Guild Chairman Alan Sparrow, Sky Sports football commentator Martin Tyler, last year's Barclays Photographer of the Season winner Owen Humphreys and chairman of the Football Writers' Association, Andy Dunn.

As Barclays Photographer of the Season, Shopland receives an official Barclays award and £10,000 worth of photographic equipment, while Adrian Dennis receives £5,000 of photographic equipment in addition to his Barclays Shot of the Season award.
