Under-21 Premier League Cup: Tough ties for Arsenal and Fulham

Michael Owen has made the draw for the Round of 32 of the inaugural Under-21 Premier League Cup

  • Serge Gnabry's Arsenal face a trip to Norwich City in the inaugural competition

Arsenal will go to Norwich City and Aston Villa will meet Fulham in the Under-21 Premier League Cup after former England international Michael Owen picked out some interesting ties in the draw for the Round of 32 of the inaugural competition.

Owen, who was meeting under-12 and under-15 players from Category 1 academies at an event organised by the Premier League at the University of Warwick, was happy to oblige with the draw and the former Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Manchester United forward picked out some plum ties.

Following two rounds of regional qualifiers involving Category 2 and 3 academies, the Category 1 academy sides enter the fray in the Round of 32 stage. Owen picked out four all-Category 1 Academy ties.

Middlesbrough were the first club to emerge from the hat and were drawn to face Everton at home, while one of Owen's former clubs, Stoke City, were pitted against Manchester City at home. Fulham travel to Aston Villa and Arsenal, the last side to emerge from the draw, face a visit to Norwich City.

Elsewhere, Burnley will host Barclays Under-21 Premier League leaders Sunderland if they get past Crewe Alexandra, while Exeter City will get to host fellow south-coast side Southampton provided they overcome Crystal Palace in Qualifying Round 2.

The Under-21 Premier League Cup takes the form of one-off fixtures which are played on a regional basis until the Round of 16, when the draw becomes national. The final will be played over two legs, which are home and away at the main stadia of both teams.
